ESP Project 4: Visual Authorship and Space

Unit Title: Exploring Studio Practices

”We like cheese on our Pizza, not in our movies.” Scene-Stealers, Monsters, Vampire’s and Robots: Visual Authorship and Space

02.12.19: Briefing

The fourth project is about an art form which has the most impact on people. Movies. Everyone loves good movies, as they don’t nessasary remember all the poems, lyrics to a song or paintings, but everyone remembers movies, they have a lot of impact on our mind and favouriting characters. A lot of the time movies inspire us to undertake a certain life journey, there are different genres and therefore everyone can find something for themselves. Movies can also entertain while making a point, they present information which we might not have had before and can stun us when we watch it happening on screen.

The aim of this project is to watch at least 2 movies from the list given, review them in our sketchbook to create character development from scenes and from our imagination in order to create two final illustrations interpreting a specific scene from each as an illustrative artwork.

The rules are that the final two finished pieces from two movies, they cannot be a poster, they have to be an interpretation of the movie or a certain scene in the movie something like a fan art of some kind that will appeal to the fans of the movie.

Another rule is that you cannot freeze a frame of the movie and copy it and draw it, but rather re-present it from a different perspective. Text is not allowed. The final two finished illustration should convey the narrative of the scene without the use of text.

For this project, I am only allowed to use key line fine liner which is black colour, and second colour of my choice. This means if I choose to use red I can play with the opacity and tones of it to achieve the finished look.

The goal and final outcome is to make 2 original pieces of film fan art, as finished artworks. 1 will measure 30x30cm, and 1 will measure 30x60cm. They should present themselves on a good cartage paper.

Movies that I can choose from Monsters, Vampire’s and Robots film selection:

Research & Findings

Barry Blankenship
illustrator/designer in the PNW

I was greatly inspired by the Illustrator Barry Blankenship during this project. His style reminds me so much of the atmosphere of ‘’Stranger Things’’ series, with the beautiful stars in the sky it adds so much to the atmosphere. In his work, he mostly uses two to three colours and works with them really good. He depicts the movies by using symbols and reflecting on the scene of the movies which is exactly what my task is about. In my personal work, I would love to incorporate the stars and the sky as he does. Artists website where and where I found him: http://www.barrytheartguy.com

First movie: Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

The first movie I decided to watch was Pan’s Labyrinth. I have never watched this movie before, but I heard a lot of good opinions about it.Pan’s Labyrinth movie, is about a young girl Ofelia. She is set to live with her  regnant mother and sadistic stepfather who is in an army. She meets a fairy in the new house, and is asked to complete three tasks for him. The movie finishes with Ofelia entering the kingdom of magic, but in reality she is killed by her stepfather.

The movie Hellboy is about a baby demon called Hellboy who after six years later serves as an agent in Bureau of Paranormal Researcher and defence where he is aided by Abe sapien character. Abe sapiens is a merman who has psychic powers. The movie is about these paranormal creatures that are saving the world from disgusting creature.

Digital illustrations created by me, for the movie ”Hellboy” (2004) Here I wanted to develop positions and explore the colour pallets that is why there are more than two colours.

Developing my final illustrations (sketchbook scans)

To develop my final illustrations further, it was important for me to develop my ideas and explore many different characters in both movies. Here are some of my sketchbook development and

Exhibition

Final exhibition for Scene Stealers project took place in our studios. The idea of the exhibition was that the whole of year 2 had to pin up their work on the walls and walk around the studio to give feedback, opinions and criticism for every person in the studio. By doing this, we were able to receive feedback from many different minds in their room and get to see what everyone produced as part of their final illustrations. In my opinion i
